A St. Mark’s 1st Grade Teacher has a passion for teaching six- and seven-year-old students who work at grade level or above.  The ideal candidate will work effectively as a member of a grade-level team to plan all aspects of the 1st Grade program. As a member of the Lower School faculty, the 1st Grade teacher will report to the Head of the Lower School and is responsible for maintaining an engaging 1st Grade classroom environment, assessing and reporting the progress of the students, leading parent conferences and managing parent communication regarding all aspects of the 1st Grade year. 

Duties: 

  • Teach a class of 20-22 1st Grade students
  • Guide the work of a shared instructional assistant
  • Establish positive and supportive relationships with each student and family
  • Plan and deliver structured literacy lessons and math instruction using school approved  curriculum and resources
  • Understand and apply assessment-based instruction and classroom differentiation 
  • Communicate grade level goals, student learning, and classroom activities to parents
  • Be a contributing member of the Lower School faculty through curriculum committee work and the ongoing work of the division
  • Keep up to date with developments in subject areas, teaching resources, and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities
  • Maintains professional competence and collegial collaboration by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings, and other professional activities
  • Attend evening and weekend events to support Admissions and other needs of the school
  • Assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Head of Lower School or Head of School
 

Required Skills and Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood or Elementary Education 
  • A deep understanding of educating the whole child
  • A passion for teaching and learning
  • A collaborative spirit 
  • A personal commitment to professional growth
  • A minimum of three years of teaching experience
  • Genuine affinity for working with children and families in a highly engaged community
 

Physical Requirements and Work Environment: 

  • Enjoys multitasking in a high-paced environment dealing with multiple priorities
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time
  • Physical agility to lift up to 50 pounds; to bend, stoop, and reach overhead
  • Work intermittently in outside weather conditions for student events and recess
