Position Overview:
The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) delivers safe and compassionate care as a vital member of the healthcare team, providing patient-centered care and ensuring patient safety. This role serves patients seeking services from the TB Elimination Program, working with the clinical team to create and maintain efficient, patient-centered daily clinic and case management operations while providing comprehensive care to all Harris County Public Health patients. The LVN operates within the legal scope of practice of an LVN and adheres to the federal, state, and local laws and regulations, as well as the policies, procedures, and guidelines of Harris County Public Health (HCPH).

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Oversee a caseload of tuberculosis clients, monitoring their medical history, symptoms, and medication adherence, while documenting any side effects. Coordinate all aspects of the TB care plan, ensuring timely and accurate implementation, with prompt and precise entry into the electronic medical record (EMR) system.

  • Perform clinical tasks, including (but not limited to) measuring and documenting vital signs, collecting and preparing laboratory specimens, and conducting basic patient assessments.
  • Assist the medical team in tasks such as (but not limited to) physical exams and medical procedures, administering and dispensing prescribed medication according to Pharmacy D regulations, patient education, and responding to emergency medical situations.
  • Receive, review, and prioritize all laboratory results. Ensure that all abnormal laboratory values are documented in the electronic medical record (EMR) system, and confirm that these values are reviewed by the medical provider for referrals or treatment as needed.
  • Control patient flow through the facility during clinic visits, including discharging patients from the clinic following the medical provider's care plan and providing appropriate patient education.
  • Manage medical inventory, including vaccines and oral medications, by ordering and ensuring the clinic is properly stocked.
  • Participate in performing quality assurance checks on lab specimens and prepare specimens for transport.
  • Administer age-appropriate immunizations and stay updated with all CDC vaccine schedule changes; assist the nursing team in providing CDC-recommended vaccinations.

Requirements


Education:

  • Associate degree or diploma in Nursing

Experience:
  • One (1) year of experience as an LVN in an outpatient clinic setting

Licensure:
  • Current licensure as an LVN in the State of Texas by the Texas Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners
  • Active license with no restriction as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in the State of Texas by the Texas Board of Nursing 
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certified
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License (TX upon hire)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and navigating EMRs
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal & written)
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and foster teamwork in a diverse environment
  • Knowledge of current CDC recommendations for immunizations
  • Ability to organize material, prioritize job tasks, make reliable judgments, and draw conclusions from verbal discussions and written data
  • Ability to draw conclusions from data, such as lab tests, to record this information accurately in patient’s record, and to notify the Clinical Manager or medical providers when deviations occur

Preferences


Experience:

  • Experience as an LVN in a public health setting, low-income population-serving clinic, or related field

  • Experience working in refugee and/or global health

General Information


 

Position Type, and Typical Hours of Work:

  • Full-Time

  • Monday – Friday | 8:00a.m. – 5:00p.m.
  • Must be willing to flex work hours when required, including weekends.
  • Able to travel within Harris County as needed

 Work Environment:

  • This job operates in a professional clinic environment

  • This position also operates in a standard office environment with standard equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers

Physical Demands:

  • This role requires the ability to lift, carry, push, pull up to 50 pounds and bending & standing for periods at a time.
