Requirements
  • The Programmer/Designer (PD) will support the development, planning, and managing of automation controls utilizing PLCs, HMIs, & VFDs within the S3S fleet of electrical systems.  They are responsible for the design, installation, programming, commissioning, and troubleshooting of such automation and control systems to ensure they remain on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with industry standards, HSE, and S3S-Standards. 

Essential Functions:  

  • VFD / PLC Technician responsibilities, plus: 
  • Develop HMI software applications: 
  • WinCC 
  • CX-Designer 
  • Red Lion 
  • Develop PLC software programs: 
  • TIA Portal 
  • CX-One 
  • RS Logix. 
  • Program and commission VFD parameters and comms interfaces: 
  • Siemens 
  • Yaskawa 
  • Vacon / Danfoss 
  • Allen Bradley 
  • Integrate VFD controls into automation schemes. 
  • Assist with design, documentation, configuration, programming, testing and commissioning of all new controls / PLC / VFD / HMI / Fieldbus systems as well as modifications to legacy and existing systems. 
  • Assist in the development of project functional technical specifications, testing documents, etc.  
  • Read and understand P&ID’s, loop diagrams, process flow diagrams.  
  • Assist in the design of control panels and associated automation systems. 
  • Generate supporting documentation (BOM, drawings, manuals, etc.). 
  • Configure/calibrate field instrumentation and other equipment. 
  • Troubleshoot PLC issues. 
  • Perform upgrades of hardware and software. 
  • Educate and train the team members on these devices.   
  • Provide tech support to field personnel when needed. 
  • Provide excellent interdepartmental service and satisfaction.   
  • Work in collaboration with the Electrical Team members.   
  • Interdepartmental collaboration When required or requested. 
  • Assist in equipment requirement specs. 
  • Assist in purchasing duties when required. 
  • Assist with maintaining spare parts inventory and supplies used for all S3S Electrical and Departmental needs.  
  • Ensure all maintenance/repair records are completed and properly filed. 
  • Assist field technicians, over the phone, troubleshoot deployed centrifuge assets that are experiencing problems, diagnose the corrective actions, and facilitate the repair.  
  • Assist Lean Managers in development of new SOP regarding electrical operations, maintenance, and troubleshooting. 
  • Organize meeting for collaboration & dissemination of electrical findings to other districts VTs. 
  • Maintain and organize documentation regarding all VFD and controls systems upgrade installations. 
  • Assist with maintaining and organizing the departmental JIRA Active Sprint & Backlog. 
  • Achieve and Maintain a SCRUM Master and Stake Holder certification. 
  • May be asked to provide evaluation input of current PW1, PW2, or VT employees for internal promotion. 
  • Other duties as assigned by the EM. 
  • May be required to work in other locations from time to time. 

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  

 

  • Read and interpret Engineering Drawings, Schematics and BOMs. 
  • Sketch/Draw electrical system diagrams and layouts.   
  • Understanding the workings of Variable Frequency Drive equipment.      
  • Understanding of the workings of PLC equipment.      
  • Experience working with low voltage devices, such as 600VAC and lower. 
  • Knowledge and experience in calibrating equipment.   
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills in English (Spanish is a plus).   
  • Ability to utilize measuring devices: tape measure, caliper, thread gauge, etc. 
  • Must be mechanically inclined / adept, and familiar with hand tools. 
  • Ability to identify the thread size and specification of an unknown fastener. 
  • Understanding of proper fastener installation, and torquing.  
  • Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools. 
  • Able to communicate effectively with others. 
  • Must have manual dexterity and ability to lift up to 50 lbs. 
  • Able to understand and carry out routine oral and written instructions. 

Minimum Required Education, Credentials, Licenses and Experience:  

 

  • High School Diploma, or equivalent GED 
  • 2+ Years of work experience as a PLC programmer (Siemens, Omron), or a similar position in the Engineering field.  
  • 2+ Years with industrial automation network components and basic architecture. 
  • 2+ Years with industrial communication protocols. (Profinet, Modbus, Ethernet/IP, Profibus) 
  • 2+ Years experience with industrial automation engineering suites. (TIA Portal, Step 7, CX-One, CX-Designer, WinCC, etc.) 
  • 1+ Year of work experience with Variable Frequency Drives as a Technician, or a similar position in the Engineering field. 
  • 1+ year of AutoCAD or related drafting/design software experience. 
  • Scrum Master Certification (Preferred, Certification on-site available, within 90 days of hire) 
  • Forklift Certified (Preferred, Certification on-site available)
