Role Summary:
The Senior Accountant role is responsible for supporting the accounting department, and accounting leadership in their particular function, by providing advanced accounting support, preparing and reviewing journal entries, account reconciliations, detailed variance analysis as well as performing inter-company accounting, supporting the monthly close process, supporting the budgeting process, coordinating special projects, leading and/or supporting new initiatives to improve analytics and reporting results to upper management and participating in other general accounting projects as assigned.
Responsibilities include:
Account Reconciliations and Journal Entries. Prepare and record various monthly account reconciliations and review reconciliations prepared by others. Analyze various general ledger accounts on a regular basis, prepare recurring and other journal entries to support the monthly close process and coordinate the team’s efforts to clear such items, and ensure that documentation meets the standards of sound internal controls, as needed.
Reporting. Lead and coordinate monthly reporting and accounting close duties for function. Support and review the preparation of monthly and quarterly financial reporting packages for accounting managers, senior leaders and other departments as necessary. Communicate monthly results to management and other business units. May be responsible for creating Board of Directors information packages for insertion into periodic Boards of Directors’ meetings presentations.
Month Close. Leads the close process to insure all involved personnel are meeting deadlines, that the functional close process is completed in a timely manner and supports the monthly close process by preparing various journal entries, performing analytics and assisting with review of journals.
Compliance. Establishing and maintaining appropriate accounting principles, practices and procedures to ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley, GAAP, IFRS, FERC and other applicable regulatory policies and standards. Proactively identifying potential issues and developing remedial action to prevent the occurrence of deficiencies.
Processes and Procedures. Identifying new processes and reviewing existing ones to create more efficient workflows and insuring controls for processes are sufficient and compliant. Leveraging technology to automate processes and procedures surrounding financial reporting and analysis and assuming ownership of special projects to develop and implement improvements in current processes and systems.
Leadership. Overseeing people management aspects of the function including performance, recruitment and employee development while serving as a key resource for the function for training and mentoring less senior accountants. May have some supervisory responsibilities.
Monthly Analyses. Prepare and review monthly analyses, including budget-to-actual, prior-year variances and other key performance indicators for senior management and Board financial-review packages.
Cross-functional support. Participate in special projects and support other accounting functions as needed.
Audit Support. Acting as primary contact for audit requests to insure a timely response and prepare supporting schedules for audit activities as assigned. Interfacing with internal and external auditors at various times during the year.
Budgeting. Assist in the preparation of budgets as needed.
Acquisitions. Providing assistance with assimilating purchase acquisitions into company records.
And other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
6-8 years of experience in an Accounting or Finance role
Travel requirements are limited in this role
Certificates & Licenses:
CPA eligible preferred

Typically supervises and leads a team of other accounting professionals and is expected to provide coaching and guidance to other accounting professionals within their function. May have oversight responsibility (directly or indirectly) of one or more employees with the expectation of providing strong leadership, direction and development of team.
Has an in-depth business understanding across segments with a strong understanding of how their role impacts the success of Buckeye's business operations. High-level understanding of business units, their function and the other functions within the department. Has built a network of peers throughout the business. Can effectively discuss and teach others how Buckeye operates and how functions / business units work.
