Position Summary

The Senior Property and Casualty Underwriter is responsible for overseeing and managing property and casualty business workflows, providing technical expertise and ensuring adherence to underwriting guidelines. The role develops strategies for new business opportunities and portfolio retention and actively contributes to achieving business targets. They cultivate long-term broker relationships, while also supporting training for new staff in underwriting processes.

What will your job entail?

Hybrid position - 3 days a week in the Houston, TX office

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and strategically manage workflows for new property and casualty business and renewals, showcasing advanced professionalism, technical expertise, and adherence to underwriting guidelines.
  • Evaluate, prioritize, and select submissions and price risks that will develop an underwriting profit for the carrier, refer or decline risks that present excessive risk.
  • Drive risk assessment comprehensively, evaluate factors such as coverage value, location, usage, safety features, and other considerations to make informed decisions on risk acceptance.
  • Determine appropriate coverage limits, insurance premiums, policy terms based on risk assessment, ensure active portfolio management of complex property and casualty accounts.
  • Negotiate terms and conditions with the broker, recognize and create cross sell opportunities for other products while ensuring compliance with regulations and guidelines.
  • Develop strategic initiatives to create new business opportunities, maximize retention of assigned portfolios and contribute significantly to achieving business targets.
  • Manage internal and external relationships that will deliver superior customer service. Develop professional, long-term relationships with brokers and agents, expanding the book of business and operating within delegated authority limits.
  • Partner with underwriting teams, foster seamless communication, and optimize task coordination to support the overall underwriting process.
  • Provide accurate premium forecasts and business plans, contribute to budgeting processes and support the achievement of performance targets.
  • Optimize underwriting processes, introduce new technologies, and align the department with broader organizational goals. Deliver training for new underwriters on underwriting guidelines, processes, and systems.
  • Attend industry events and stay abreast of property and casualty underwriting trends, emerging risks in the sector, regulatory changes, and adjust underwriting strategies, accordingly.


Work Experience:

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in Property and Casualty Underwriting with Bachelor’s degree or 6 years and a Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Experience in Upstream Energy Casualty Underwriting a plus
     

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred; Risk Management, Actuarial and Business Administration preferred. Any other related discipline or commensurate work experience considered.


Licenses & Certifications:

  • Prescribed: Minimum requirements for state P&C and/or surplus line licenses.
  • Preferred: Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC)

The target salary range for this position is $118,360.00 - $155,347.00 annually.

The wage range for this role considers many factors, such as training, transferable skills, work experience, licensure and certification, business needs, and market demands. The pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. Full-time roles are eligible for bonuses and benefits.
