Essential Functions of the Position:
Animal Rescue Technician
- Respond to service calls to assist injured animals or animals in distress within the service area of the Houston SPCA.
- Prioritize calls and make judgment calls for responding to animals needing assistance based on Houston SPCA protocols and directives issued by the Houston SPCA rescue management.
- Establish control and capture of all types of animals in a variety of health and temperaments, including fractious animals and animals in hazardous environments.
- Report observed health or behavior issues to the appropriate staff on duty.
- Responsible for proper cleaning and disinfection of assigned areas on a daily basis.
- Maintain assigned equipment, supplies and vehicles in safe condition and report any problems or needed repairs to the Sr. Emergency Veterinary Medical Technician.
- Maintain database by entering accurate information on the animals in our care.
- Keep current inventory of necessary program supplies and report shortages to the Sr. Emergency Veterinary Medical Technician.
- Provide information to the public about Houston SPCA programs and promoting good animal care and responsible pet ownership.
- Advise potential adopters of Houston SPCA adoption benefits, policies and procedures.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned.
Veterinary Technician
- Works under the supervision and/or assist a staff veterinarian or contract Veterinarian employed by the Houston SPCA.
- Assist Veterinary Services Coordinator(s) and/or Veterinary Services management in ensuring routine examinations and treatments of animals in the care of the Houston SPCA are properly performed as required.
- Monitor the Houston SPCA care of animals and report any discrepancies to the Veterinary Services
- Assist staff with initial customer questions and/or issues in a timely manner.
- Responsible for all aspects of medical care including, administration of preventive medications and vaccines, and caring out diagnostic and treatment plans as assigned by the Veterinarian.
- Ensure assigned areas are cleaned on a daily basis.
- Working knowledge of x-ray and blood diagnostic equipment.
- Prepare animals, instruments and equipment for surgical procedures.
- Collect specimens and perform laboratory procedures.
- Maintain database by entering accurate information on the animals in our care.
- Ensure proper labeling and dating of medications, maintains accurate inventory of all medications (including controlled substances) in stock and replenishes stock as necessary, and report discrepancies to the veterinary services manager
