General Summary
The Senior Accountant is responsible for preparing higher risk account reconciliations and deposit certification on a monthly basis. This position is responsible for reviewing and approving lower risk account reconciliations and bank reconciliation prepared by staff accountants and accounting clerks. Supports a variety of month-end closing activities, such as creating journal entries, verifying, analyzing, and monitoring daily financial transactions and revenue collections. In addition, the Senior Accountant is responsible for ensuring all transactions between the sub-ledger and general ledger are posted accurately. Furthermore, the position is responsible for identifying potential system enhancement opportunities and working with the system administrator to implement the approved enhancement. This role also supports the Manager of Revenue Accounting with coordinating meetings, preparing documents, and fulfilling requests from other Harris County departments and external parties, including external auditors, service providers, and consultants.
Duties & Responsibilities
Prepares higher risk monthly account reconciliations and deposit certification; posts transactions in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, and County policies and procedures.
Reviews and approves lower risk account and bank reconciliations prepared by staff accountants and accounting clerks.
Supports a variety of month-end closing activities, such as creating journal entries, verifying, analyzing, and monitoring daily financial transactions and revenue collections.
Ensures all transactions between the sub-ledger and general ledger are posted accurately.
Identifies potential system enhancement opportunities and works with the system administrator to implement the approved enhancement.
Supports management with fulfilling with internal and external parties' requests
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Working knowledge of Harris County structures, policies, and procedures.
Working knowledge of GASB, financial accounting rules, regulations, and standards.
Strong understanding of financial statements, general ledger accounting, revenue recognition, and account reconciliations. Ability to read, comprehend, interpret, and communicate details and changes as needed.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to work well in a team environment.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Strong analytical skills; ability to reason and solve problems independently. Advanced user in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
Ability to multi-task and prioritize competing deadlines.
Work Environment
There are no major sources of discomfort. A normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature controls and furnishings is provided.
Physical Demands
Light Work-Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg control requires exertion of forces greater than that of sedentary work and if the worker sits most of the time, the job is considered light work.
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work
This is a full time position. Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday. Hours may vary based on the business needs of the department.
Education / Experience
Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration or related field. Minimum three (3) years' experience in accounting, auditing, and/or finance.
Extensive experience using Microsoft Excel.
